His evil roles—especially Mogambo in Mr. India—are remembered. Karan Arjun, Koyla, Nayak, and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge are also notable films. Let’s explore his unusual, under-the-radar existence on his birthday.
Amrish was born in Punjab to S. Nihal Singh Puri and Ved Kaur on June 22, 1932. Chaman, Madan, and Harish Puri are his brothers, while Chandrakanta is his sister. Amrish dreamed about acting since childhood. His first audition at 22 was denied due to his voice and appearance. His breakthrough came at 40, and he became a legendary Indian villain.
After his first audition rejection at 22, he gave up on Bollywood. After the rejection, he became a government insurance clerk. Amrish met legendary theatrical director and drama teacher Ebrahim Alkazi as an insurance business clerk, who recommended him to explore theatre.
He was associated with KL Saigal, a musical legend. Amrish was the singer’s cousin. Her mother was Amrish’s father, S Nihal Singh Puri’s sister. That makes Amrish and Saigal first cousins.
He was 5 feet 10 inches, but he always seemed larger on TV. Interesting thing about his feet. He was size 11 on one foot and 12 on the other. His shoe designer made special accommodations.
Amrish excelled in Hollywood as well as Bollywood. Steven Spielberg cast the actor as Mola Ram in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Steven said Amrish was his favorite villain.
