At IFFI Goa, the filmmaker addressed Bollywood’s casting couch issue, dismissing the idea that compromising guarantees success.
“I have directed Hindi films for 15-20 years. Much has been said about the casting couch. A scared girl enters and compromises. If a woman or girl can’t say ‘no,’ she may fail. It’s not like if a girl compromises, she’ll get a role, he told India Today.
The director emphasized self-respect. He said, “If a girl can say ‘no’ and respects herself, others will too. I and many others consider whether to take someone seriously; we must respect a person to cast her off.
That “this belief that compromising will improve your chances in the film industry is a myth” was his final message. Imtiaz said that in his experience, people who compromise often compromise their careers.
